France Moves to Break Encrypted Messaging
France's parliamentary intelligence delegation has recommended breaking end-to-end encryption used by platforms like WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram, granting intelligence agents and magistrates "targeted access" to encrypted messages.
The delegation claims encryption hinders investigations, but experts argue such access would introduce security vulnerabilities that can be exploited beyond state use. While a previous Senate amendment seeking forced cooperation was rejected by the National Assembly, new legislative proposals are being explored. Some lawmakers, like Senator Olivier Cadic, advocate for protecting encryption rather than weakening it, warning against self-inflicted vulnerabilities.
