There was a rather revealing article on effective altruism by Germany's largest newspaper in 2021. Quote: At one point, the philosopher does mention 'the possibility of extreme climate change,' but alongside biological weapons, out-of-control artificial intelligence, and geoengineering meaning active interventions in the Earth system itself. In other words, in a lineup of threats that are currently rather hypothetical...which is bound to make anyone informed about the scale and imminent danger of the climate crisis furrow their brow. This is why ordinary people dislike effective altruism. Normies choose a cause they can use for the purpose of signalling political affiliation or simply feeling good and effective altruists destroy it by coming up with causes that have increasingly higher expected value.
