Tolerance isn't a choice you make once. It's a policy that quietly goes into effect without anyone voting on it. The first time, there's always a reason. The circumstances, the timing, this one situation being genuinely different from the rest. You're not lowering the bar, you're just being reasonable about an unreasonable moment. That's the story. And maybe it's even honest. The first time isn't really the problem. The first time is just a moment. The second time is where everything actually gets decided. No announcement. No deliberation. Just a quiet shift because now the exception has a precedent, and precedent has its own gravity. And that gravity makes every moment after it a little easier to let slide, a little less resistance each time, until eventually you're sitting with something you'd have walked away from two years ago and calling it growth. It isn't growth. It's tolerance that kept compounding until it became the standard and nobody ever agreed to that.
