A relationship usually ends quietly long before it ends officially. Not with one catastrophic fight. More often through small changes in attention. The questions become perfunctory. The listening gets thinner. You stop bringing each other the strange little details of your day because somewhere deep down you no longer believe they'll be held with real curiosity. And honestly, I think people underestimate how painful emotional half-presence can become over time. Because humans can survive conflict surprisingly well. At least conflict still contains energy. Recognition. Investment. What's harder to survive is indifference disguised as maintenance. The feeling that someone is technically still there while psychologically drifting further away every month. A conversation where replies arrive correctly but not warmly. An apology that checks every box except sincerity. The subtle loneliness of realizing you're no longer being deeply perceived by someone who once noticed everything about you. It's strange how exhausting it is to be around interactions that contain all the structure of care without the aliveness of it. Like standing under artificial light for too long. Your eyes adjust eventually. But some part of your body still knows the sun is missing.
