We debated an ascii art for the merge, but figured it would look like an epic fail to print an early celebration and then blow up, so we just try to do our stuff and not be too visual about it :)

Fair enough! 

It would not have to be celebratory necessarily, as you said in case the rocket explodes on the launch pad. 

Some kind of marker with a message that the hard fork block is reached could be good. If it is an ascii galloping rhinoceros, that is also good.
