The biggest flaw to avoid in the EU blockchain voting experiment is weak cybersecurity for the following reasons: - Any security vulnerability could lead to irreversible fraud (exploiting vulnerabilities in smart contracts or the consensus protocol). - Voting requires secrecy, non-repudiation, and transparency. - Vulnerabilities could expose voter identities (breaking secrecy) or allow votes to be altered (breaching integrity). - A single breach could destroy confidence in an entire democracy, especially in a multicultural entity like the EU. - Sophisticated attacks such as APTs (advanced persistent threats) from state actors or actors. - Exploiting flaws in system design (such as reentry attacks). Why is it a top priority? Elections are a critical political infrastructure, and security flaws here mean not only financial loss but also a threat to social stability. Past experience has shown that security concerns are a major reason for not scaling up. Proposed solution: Adopt a hybrid approach (paper records + blockchain for auditing), with independent security audits and extensive penetration testing before any large-scale deployment. Security should be a cornerstone, not just an added benefit.
