the age old question—how many homers does it take to generate more value than a high batting average hitter? this always serves are a good example of why teams value power over hit. a .250 hitter with 27 homers is just as good as a .300 hitter with 5 homers for this season, you can see how this hypothetical plays out with otto lopez and miguel vargas - lopez is hitting .318 / .351 / .470 with 9 homers for a .354 woba - vargas is hitting .235 / .343 / .467 with 24 homers for a .351 woba over a 80 point gap in batting average, but similar woba average largely due to the power output difference between vargas and lopez
