while we’re all focused on miz’s velo, what really makes him a freakish/alien-like athlete—velo, extension, and spin rate (rpm) here’s how the mechanics work - miz’s fastball averages 100.3 mph and 102.6 mph perceived velo - his fastball looks faster to the hitter because he’s 6’7 with a 7’5 extension that allows him to release the ball over a foot closer to the plate than average pitchers - his avg rpm on his fastball is over 2600 (3rd highest in the league) which creates an illusion of a fastball that “jumps” on the hitter we can see this in the analytics - 62% of the time hitters are under miz’s fastball - 3.5 inches is the average distance batters are under his fastball (best in the league) from a hitters perspective - a fastball traveling ~2 mph faster than its actual velo (105.5 feels like 107.5) - a fastball that “rises” because his spin rate negates some of the expected drop due to gravity if you ever wonders what the pitching equivalent to wemby/giannis is, it’s miz
