Linux has reached a 5.03% market share on desktop and laptop computers in the United States.

This marks a milestone, reflecting accelerated growth: from 1% to 2% in 8 years (up to April 2021), from 2% to 3% in 2 years and 2 months (up to June 2023), from 3% to 4% in 7 months (February 2024), and from 4% to 5% in 1 year and 2 months (July 2025). Adding ChromeOS (2.71%), which is based on Linux, the combined share reaches 7.74% in the US.

Worldwide, Linux holds between 4% and 4.3% of desktop share, macOS (14-16%) and Windows (71-73%), but it dominates servers and supercomputers with over 96%.

All this while Windows loses 13 points of dominance share in 10 years.

Consoles like the Steam Deck with SteamOS and similar have also facilitated this.
