Can’t believe I’d never heard of this before. Greek guy named Pytheas basically sailed around all of Europe ~330 BC - He left from modern Marseille, but it’s disputed whether he went overland through France/Spain or sailed through Gibraltar since the Carthaginians had shut down the strait at the time. - He gets to the north side of Europe and circumnavigates Britain, including the Orkney Islands and names a distant island “Thule” possibly Iceland - Offers explanation of the tides being caused by the moon measurements of latitude, and is the first written record of the Arctic midnight sun
