Vitalik Buterin has argued that much of today’s DeFi activity is essentially “fake” because it depends too heavily on centralized stablecoins. In a recent post on X, the Ethereum co-founder criticized lending strategies built around USDC, saying they go against the core idea of decentralized finance - the decentralization of risk. Buterin pointed out that algorithmic stablecoins like MakerDAO’s DAI, which are backed by overcollateralized crypto assets, represent “real” DeFi in contrast to more centralized alternatives. Looking ahead, he envisions a shift away from dollar-pegged tokens toward diversified indexes backed by decentralized collateral.
