Discord users are canceling their subscriptions after learning about the platform’s new age verification plans. The company announced that full access will soon require either a face scan or an official ID check, prompting many to drop their Nitro memberships in protest. The policy comes in the wake of a 2025 data breach that exposed ID photos from roughly 70,000 users who had previously gone through age verification in the UK and Australia. Discord clarified that most adults won’t need to go through manual verification, as an AI system will estimate users’ ages based on their activity and account behavior.

Vitalik Buterin has argued that much of today’s DeFi activity is essentially “fake” because it depends too heavily on centralized stablecoins. In a recent post on X, the Ethereum co-founder criticized lending strategies built around USDC, saying they go against the core idea of decentralized finance - the decentralization of risk. Buterin pointed out that algorithmic stablecoins like MakerDAO’s DAI, which are backed by overcollateralized crypto assets, represent “real” DeFi in contrast to more centralized alternatives. Looking ahead, he envisions a shift away from dollar-pegged tokens toward diversified indexes backed by decentralized collateral.
