This is something that needs to be addressed immediately and there is a growing disappointment that many have felt in recent weeks, myself included.

Why should we continue building a future onchain? Especially when it is exacerbating the same harmful behavior we already see in society? Why would we onboard our friends and peers?

If we want to rally around ownership, we need to stop pretending that uploading something to the blockchain will be an empowering act by itself. 

A culture of ownership is a culture that values agency, safety, and consent.

If we can't get this right, it doesn't matter what we build... we will have built the same things we wanted to get away from in the first place.

thats such a great question, and i would love to unpack it further. my opinion for platforms is similar to what I've heard people say about cameras: the best one is the one that's in your hand when you need it. so if substack is where you feel like you'll build a consistent writing ritual and its a space you love, then substack is the perfect platform 💚 

i wish onchain publishing had more developed conventions about what certain things mean... is a mint the same as a like? is tipping the same as a subscribe? i also wish it was geared more towards provenance and that i could write entire essays with a social graph showing where certain ideas came from (very similar to how i use are.na for idea gardening). but self publishing is entirely funded by myself, and i don't always have a lot of time for it. most people who have been able to successfully monetize their content invest waaay more time in it than i ever have, so for now everything i do is just at a pace that i can afford, which is slow & thoughtful

How would you compare it to Patreon? I’ve never used it but it seems to be a popular web2 for creators. Personally I’m on the substack train :)

Being on this app has made me realize how freaky it can be “online”. My parents were pretty strict about my online access when I was a kid in the late 90s into the 2000s. I got into silly shit like Omegle and wasn’t on MySpace or AIM (I missed a lot of culture lol) so to be here is a wild adjustment BUT this place is also incredibly welcoming. In certain spots. It’s also scary - essentially the point made in the original message.
