Damn, first time I've run into a real storage issue on Farcaster. Just realized a playlist I curated for Tunecaster is no longer available because the cast it was in got purged by the hubs when I ran out of storage. Not a good feeling, Iโ€™ll tell you that

Damnn thatโ€™s wack ๐Ÿ˜“ sorry to hear that bro. Kinda opposite of the โ€œalways onchainโ€ โ€œimmutableโ€ feelings we were growing to consider an inherent part of the web3 experience. Itโ€™s like that moment back when people realized their NFTs were just jpegs stores on an Amazon Web server, and when the hosting was gone, so was our image ๐Ÿ™ƒ๐Ÿ’€

You donโ€™t realize how bad this is until it happens to you. I can take responsibility for not buying more storage units since I understand how the system works. But at the same time, I feel like I didnโ€™t get a proper heads-up that I was about to lose casts that are valuable to me personally, to the app Iโ€™m building, and to the network as a whole

Yeah I legit have some of those NFTs I was mentioning that went kaput. Itโ€™s not fun. Your scenario even worse so imo. Absolutely agree that there should be some kind of warning & some kind of โ€œtrash binโ€ recovery kind of option for this whole FC storage scenario.

That sucks, sorry that happened. Apparently hosting on IPFS or Arweave is supposed to be the solution but I have my doubts

Yeah same here. But hopefully it remains true that those are genuine solutions!

Thanks! Do you mind giving us the quick TLDR on any differences between IPFS & Arweave? And would you say โ€œpermanentโ€ is relative? Or are we supposed to genuinely take it as literal permanence?

For sure! Ill link a previous post of mine below which is pretty good for IPFS/Arweave but let me know if you have any followups. Re "permanence" for Arweave, I think of it as two components: indefinite + immutable. When you upload data to Arweave you essentially "pre pay" the network of nodes to store it based on the file size and the projected cost of storage for 200 years. That cost is very conservative so at current rates, the network is incentivized to hang on to your files for many times that (practically indefinitely). Re immutability, Arweave's mining mechanism also ensures that the file you upload remains unchanged/unaltered from the original. In addition the mining "game" rewards nodes that store as much data as possible. If any single node was to not store (delete) your file, then they risk not being rewarded. It would take the vast majority of nodes to delete your file for it to be removed. https://warpcast.com/jonniesparkles/0xf616f4c0 Hope this is helpful!

Btw @mrwildenfree, I see you're into music - maybe not you're genre but check out my sweet music app: https://playdead.permagate.io Everything there (including the domain) is hosted on Arweave!
