Looks like Russia’s gearing up for another round of mobilization this fall. The budget’s running dry, and they can’t afford to keep paying contract soldiers like before. On top of that, fewer and fewer people are signing up lately. To get ready, the government has rushed through a bunch of new laws tighter censorship, more power for the FSB, and upgrades to their mobilization system. They’re building a fully digital draft system now, with all the databases and registries linked up. Border guards already have access to it: if someone’s been called up and tries to leave the country, they’ll be stopped at the border.

I think Russia, if the war continues, can win this easily. I’m surprised Europe hasn’t gotten involved more closely.

Throughout all of 2024, Russia captured less than 1% of additional Ukrainian territory and not a single major city. Even those minor gains came at the cost of massive ‘meat assaults’ involving heavy human losses. So I wouldn’t speak of a Russian victory let alone an easy one. At the moment, this is a war of resources including human resources. In such a war, the focus should be on destroying military potential in order to force Russia to stop and make some concessions. Therefore, yes, Europeans should invest all available resources into strengthening Ukraine’s missile and drone programs.

I don’t think Russia has ever had an easy victory. But I do think that Ukraine is running out of able bodied fighters, and if this persisted long enough Russia wins

Ukraine is taking losses. But Russia is taking far more. If you look at the testimonies of Russian soldiers, they’re whining that there are no more ideologically driven troops left (not that I care for their “ideals” lol, but still). That said, Ukraine should stay on the defensive for now. There’s no need to try launching counterattacks at this stage. The more Russia keeps attacking, the better.

I hadn’t seen anything on Russian losses. But that didn’t stop them in the First World War. Russia loves the meat grinder.
