On giving up for something better: In the beginning, there was light…work. As a cashier at a donut shop during the graveyard shift, there are lots of opportunities to daydream about better entry level positions at McDonalds 🍟. While the cooks and the manager had more responsibilities, it seemed as though all of us had the shared task of selling donuts. However, as my career sprouted towards the direction I was pruning it to go, the work got heavier and more complex. When I started working on cross-functional teams, the job titles blurred and some work that seemed to land squarely in, say, the Compliance department, would be peer-reviewed by multiple departments for a better, more resilient end result. In fact, it was common to abdicate some department-specific work to such teams. Not only were more heads from multiple disciplines better, it also held generally held true that those varied perspectives yielded a stronger more cohesive solution. Sometimes, doing less can ultimately yield more.
