Many US citizens today are accustomed to their many rights and liberties as tacit protections, inalienable, fundamental, and, inherent as if they were written into their DNA. However, our nation’s forefathers and many courageous men and women fought for these rights.
The Bill of Rights was created to protect individual liberties from the government infringement. When the 14th amendment was ratified, it ensured that people born in the United States of America or who became naturalized citizens, were granted citizenship, due process, and equal protections under the law.
In 1886, a case made it to the Supreme Court that, for some very wealthy people’s benefits, twisted the 14th amendment to protect corporations by reclassifying them as “people with legal status”.
Ever since, corporations have been overshadowing the rights of individual people and using the 14th amendment to protect and engorge profits and circumvent accountability under false pretenses. It’s an undemocratic ruling and should be overturned.
