In 1989, the Chinese government massacred hundreds of their own citizens after six weeks’ worth of pro-democracy demonstrations in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square.
A lone man carrying shopping bags stood in front of oncoming tanks preventing them from moving forward. This moment in time will forever be etched in my memory as the ultimate peaceful protest against tyranny and corruption. The amount of courage it must’ve taken cannot be understated. While this man survived, he was sentenced to a 10 year prison sentence for defying China’s authoritarian government. He was a lucky one; tanks actually did run over and kill other protestors. By many accounts, it was a bloodbath and the world watched in horror.
Now, due to censorship by the Chinese government, many younger Chinese citizens are unaware of the ultimate sacrifice their older generations made.
