Before the miasma of cable news, rage podcasts, and extremist influencers, there was Letterman. There was Arsenio. There was Leno. And then there was the Tonight Show. Some might argue there was a slight political slant, but Johnny Carson made a nightly conscious effort to avoid prescribing positions on “serious issues” given his undue influence on the watching public. All were welcome and the ever-gracious Dolly Parton captured this public sentiment beautifully in this sweet song to the king of late night TV - once upon a time.
