Some years ago, I heard this inspiring speech from Arnold Schwarzenegger about “Sleep Faster”. Back in the day, I had tons of energy and I pushed myself pretty hard to do better - and I did. My life, my career is stressful, but enjoyable.
However, I’m older now and I’m starting to view this approach in a different light. When I think about this non-stop pushing to get more/be more and relate that frame of mind to how I’d like to see my own children living their lives, the difference shifts from pleasing shades of light to harsh contrasts and it’s especially poignant when I see my teenager’s every waking hour filled to the brim. Be it school, or sports, or after-school activities of oh so many varieties…the unending hurtle toward something more.
I want to teach my kids to be go-getters, but I don’t want to suffocate them by filling every second of their lives with something. When is it enough?
I want to teach my kids to Sleep Slower.
