Education is the single greatest catalyst for a promising career. The ROI on higher education in coveted fields such as medicine, law, or engineering is compelling. Unfortunately, some of the other subjects in which one can obtain an undergrad, masters, or doctorate degree, have a longer ROI. Additionally, with the advent of AI, some expect certain white collar jobs to diminish and others to disappear. Due to this uncertainty, some students are opting to get vocational training instead. The costs are generally lower and the time to finish is significantly faster. Importantly, the specialized practical skills learned during vocational training may be less likely to be replaced by AI. If the goal is a stable income that’s fairly insulated against inflation, higher education or vocational training are no longer guarantees of this, but they can play a pivotal role. This is what my wife and I tell ourselves every time we project out how much it will cost to put both our kids through college. 🤣
