If you’ve ever gone bowling or golfing on a regular or semi-regular basis, you’re likely familiar with the use of handicaps. In competitive games where the skill level of the participants varies, handicaps attempt to level the playing field to achieve parity among the players so everyone has a roughly equal chance of winning. For example, if I average a score of 150 per bowling game, my handicap would be 50. If my daughter averaged 120 per bowling game, her handicap would be 80. Let’s say those bowling averages were across 40 games each so they are fair representations of current skill level. As long as we don’t bowl over 200, we both have a roughly equal chance to win the game. Any bowlers here? 🎳
