My grandfather was a WW2 navy veteran. Chief Petty Officer. He and his wife suffered immensely during the war. My mom ended up being an only child because when her mom was pregnant, she was running from bombs and had miscarriages due to this. My grandfather was captured during the war and tortured for information. Later in life, he suffered 3 strokes and the third one brought on aphasia as he couldn’t communicate much anymore. I only knew my grandfather as a very young child when he’d already had his 3rd stroke. Despite all of his war-related ailments, he lived well into his eighties.
