I started hunting them in March after their pop got too too big Think we were up to 80 killed before I paused cause of fieldwork demands. Been too busy to focus on them recently and need to, a few spots they’ve wrecked havoc in the romaine, green leaf, and dandelion beds - they’re three favorite crops. They also really like carrots, cilantro, cucumber vines, and young scallions.

farmer friend (vt csa-er) once told me the dirty little secret was that farming was more about killing than growing. an inherent ruthlessness needed to make it all work. 80 bunnies… did you at least turn into meat for someone?

Meat for animals in the ecosystem, primarily a pack of coyotes, occasionally a few vultures. Besides our tillage, which definitely impacts soil life, we do relatively minimal killing of insects - as we don’t typically use pesticides. Four legged pests are far more impactful, deer especially at the moment. We capture and kill woodchucks. Far away the most killing we do is weeds as we cultivate with hand tools and don’t use herbicides, so we kill weeds every week. I wouldn’t say it’s more about killing than growing, yet there definitely a case for killing when production is impacted. There is little room for avoiding these acts within a thin margin business where pest’s definitely impact bottom line and viability of operations.
