I see protocols as making necessary but not-much-fun things easier to do consistently, and in the best case unconsciously. If you actually enjoy engaging in protocolized behaviors beyond a point, I start to wonder “who hurt you?”

been thinking about that range a lot…. eg the benefit of settling on a place to keep your keys vs. needing everything to be just so (have known a few of these, locked into a web of hard prefs)
