When I was younger and learned of this day I always told my dad he was lucky, born on Fathers Day and the remembrance of how we all deserve the freedoms in this life and that NO ONE is truly FREE UNTIL WE ARE ALL FREE. That being said, It is the 19th of June, also called Juneteenth. Growing up in Texas I learned at an early age that this was the day in history dealing with the emancipation of slaves. It was the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston and announced that enslaved people in Texas were free—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had declared it. Tho that didn’t fully happen until later, this day signifies the struggles that have lived dormant in our society for centuries. We need to remember that we all can stand together and stand strong, bringing empathy and changing the narrative from here forward. We must never forget our past, yet honor it and do our best to continue to strive for equality, safety, and support for everyone around the world and universe beyond.
