The tendency of the intellectual community in most countries, but particularly the United States, is to move like a herd in support of state and private power. Intellectuals like to think of themselves as dissident, critical, courageous, standing up against power. Absolutely untrue. If you look at the historical record, that's a small fringe, and they're usually punished.
