Early in his reign, he changed his name to Akhenaten, meaning “Effective of the Aten,” as a symbol of his devotion to the sun god Aten. Akhenaten abandoned the worship of traditional Egyptian gods, such as Amun, and replaced them with Atenism, the sole worship of Aten, which some historians believe was an early form of monotheism. Although the changes Akhenaten brought were significant, his reign did not last long after his death. His successors, including Pharaoh Tutankhamun, revived the worship of traditional Egyptian gods and destroyed many monuments associated with Atenism. Nevertheless, Akhenaten is remembered as a bold and innovative ruler who, although his religious reforms failed to last, left a profound legacy in the history of Ancient Egypt and the world. less
