Maybe I should reconsider my expectation that DePIN needs to achieve some form of consensus.
But without consensus, we create a need to trust participants in the network, or a coordinator of some sort, which isn't what DePIN is about.
It's would be entirely impractical to expect DePIN devs to not use any off-chain components when designing these network applications. But then for DePINs to truly become trustless and permissionless, they would have to learn a lot from the design of L2.
Perhaps that is the endgame of every DePIN, a permissionless off-chain app-specific network, settling token incentives back to it's host blockchain. In other words, an L2.
