Every member of a team designing a product must be forced to use the product for an extended period of time and to field feedback directly engaging with consumers on their choices. It is so obvious when designers, developers, engineers, & managers haven't had to use the product in the real world. Example: The folks that build icemakers for Samsung refrigerators are obviously single or have never had to make enough ice for a family of 3 or 4 in the US. It doesn't matter if it's hardware, software, consumer, or B2B, if the team isn't using it, it is probably going to suck.
