The work featured here, Timeless Knot, is an exquisite series of embroidered found photos on vintage postcards. These uniquely enhanced cards are a form of therapy and self-discovery for artist Yukimi Akiba, who lives and works in Japan using mixed media and embroidery as her primary mediums. Akiba describes the act of embroidering as "a way of not physically harming herself or others, a way of rebuilding what she had lost in her life by trauma, and now it helps relate her and the realities.” Each piece focuses on unknown women from the past, featuring countless French Knot stitches that create a vibrant, textured effect, described as "bubbling colorful threads." This current style evolved from her previous work, including the series Creative ‘Self’ Destruction (2019-2021), a collection of Polaroid self-portraits. That earlier work also played an important role in helping her reconstruct what she had lost due to illness and trauma, ultimately leading to her ability to relate herself and her reality to others through art.
