why social media?

I find it interesting to consider the point of social media and the reason everyone interacts with it. For myself, I don't really enjoy it most of the time, but I feel it's important for some seemingly ineffable reason. Maybe it's that I'll feel technologically left behind if I don't interact now. Maybe I feel a desire to try and find like-minded individuals to vibe and build something with. And maybe there is something else that I can't quite put my finger on.
