one turn that we are already speedrunning is "spend your own fake money." this will be tricky: if the token has no value it will be more like spam or an unwanted ad than a tip. (doubly so when we all do our taxes and find they've gone to zero!)

Interesting point, and yeah, I agree. I think eventually this is going to be a real problem and seen more closely akin to spam, as you said.

The thing is that for tax purposes (at least here), it's got to relate to work done during your employment. So maybe it's a grey area...

You probably wouldn't... 😬 it's not particularly great in many aspects. 

Also pretty sure people who farm tips would be considered posting in the expectation of possibly receiving a tip, and regular tips might result in tax liabilities anyhow.

Either way it's quite a grey area, and the situation can get pretty complex once you throw in extremely volatile and small market cap tokens as you mentioned in OP!
