The James Webb Space Telescope has detected methane and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of exoplanet K2-18 b, located 120 light-years from Earth. These findings suggest the planet could be a Hycean world, characterized by a hydrogen-rich atmosphere and a potential ocean-covered surface. K2-18 b, approximately 8.6 times Earth's mass, orbits within its star's habitable zone. The detection of these carbon-bearing molecules indicates active chemical processes and the possibility of environments conducive to life. Further observations are planned to explore these prospects.
