I just explained DNA sequencing to a lovely coffee shop barista and she had no problem grasping it. I think science communicators need to give more credit to non-specialists. If someone is not understanding I think more often than not it’s on the person explaining. She also remarked on the strange opaqueness of Boston/Cambridge’s biotech scene. Everywhere you turn is a mysterious insular biotech company. She was telling me how strange it was to pass by buildings & see glimpses of strange figures/instruments through the large glass windows As a much as our technologies advance, public literacy investment should also increase

Couldn’t agree more. I’ve had so many wonderful conversations with people where I’ve gotten to explain areas I specialize in and they’ve never had trouble grasping the concept, and have often found it having the information exciting. On the other hand, I’ve asked friends about their area of expertise and been given explanations that left me feeling like I knew less than before I asked. STEM programs and fields really need to work on better communication.

I love that you share this sentiment and are also someone that shares knowledge! Also totally agree that this is not a skill that everyone has nor is it something that is taught or emphasized in our training unfortunately. There really needs to be more emphasis and investment into this!
