I definitely recommend giving Firebase a spin. Their products are made to support PWA features our of the box: App Hosting, Cloud Database, Cloud Storage, User Auth, App Messages, Serverless Functions... it's like playing with legos.

The codelabs that go with the docs are pretty well written, with examples for every specific case.
