Some people here are too young to remember, but in the 1990s the US government restricted the export of cryptographic software with keys above a certain (small) size, and even proposed a hardware chip that would have an official NSA backdoor, and I’m still indignant about that thirty years later

I remember. I took part in brute forcing DES and 3DES as part of that zeitgeist.
