Grand staircases with parapets don’t just signal solemnity—they’re practically skateboard magnets. When those steps lead to a basilica, visitors expect a peaceful ascent, not a collision course with amateur ollies. Banning skaters leads to failure. The real fix is to give them something better than stairs. At Paris’s Sacré-Cœur Basilica, designers PlayLab and California Skateparks installed a temporary marble-finish skate bowl right at the staircase’s base. Genius move—except for one flaw: it’s temporary. And while it stands, skaters will grow even more attached to the spot. Here’s hoping this becomes a prototype for a permanent solution.
