In school I learned that history is boring and pointless, but now I find myself more interested in history than ever (and not just Rome either, lol).

the hard part is knowing which bits to destroy and which bits to keep

One of the reasons I love history is exactly this - we've gone through this process of balancing the past and future many times over. In fact, I'd argue that destroying the past is a way to build the future. We can't have the future and the past at the same time. You really need both, but you can't have all of both.
