Peace in Ukraine: Near or Far? 1/ There is no doubt that the official meetings held between the various parties involved in the conflict aim to put an end to this bloody 3.5-year-long war, and no one is seeking to waste time on secondary objectives anymore. The Russians cannot continue the war in its current form for several more years while making no significant advances and sustaining annual casualties of 500,000 just to occupy towns with populations of 50,000. Ukraine, on the other hand, is facing a shortage of manpower and equipment and needs to buy time to modernize its army and establish absolute qualitative superiority over its rival. They cannot rely forever on multi-layered defensive lines or drone unit defenses. However, without a doubt, Zelensky and Ukrainian leaders will not accept any agreement that involves recognizing the occupation of their land.
