I just explained DNA sequencing to a lovely coffee shop barista and she had no problem grasping it. I think science communicators need to give more credit to non-specialists. If someone is not understanding I think more often than not it’s on the person explaining. She also remarked on the strange opaqueness of Boston/Cambridge’s biotech scene. Everywhere you turn is a mysterious insular biotech company. She was telling me how strange it was to pass by buildings & see glimpses of strange figures/instruments through the large glass windows As a much as our technologies advance, public literacy investment should also increase

Thanks for sharing. I appreciate people like you with specialized knowledge who have the patience and/or communication skills to bring other people along. It creates a much more positive outlook on change and progress. How did DNA sequencing come up in conversation?

Thank you so much for the appreciation! I often come to this coffee shop to write and I was writing a piece on DNA sequencing and she was asking what I was up to. It was also one of those cool moments breaking the "4th wall" with people you see all the time, but don't know that much about you, so was dually cool :)
