I really like Friedberg, but I find it interesting that on one hand he is a very pro free-market guy, but on the other hand he sometimes says that the government should invest in an area that he is enamored with

Pretty interesting thing right now is people not really caring about the traditional political compass anymore and not blindly following their quadrant’s “ideology” and just rethinking from first principles “what is good policy?” He might say it’s good policy to have, say, environmental protection regulations, but also think it’s good to decrease nuclear regulations

nuclear energy is a matter national security or any energy tech that is changing the equation. Want to win with AI, guess what's lacking? The energy to run it is enormous. US is already behind from China wrt nuclear energy plus other things like @balajis.eth mentioned. Do we also want to be behind on this crucial tech? Idk about you, but it is obvious energy is the foundation of everything. So it make sense the get the regulation 'right' for this thing. Right now, what US have seems burdened by woke or 'safety' ideology. Like what we have in the AI world (open source vs closed source) this is 1 example: https://thebulletin.org/2024/02/congress-torpedoes-a-biden-nominee-and-casts-doubt-on-nuclear-safety/
