The last bottle of 1540 Steinwein produced that year that still exists today is currently kept in the cellar of the winery at the Würzburg Municipal Hospital as a permanent loan exhibit.

It is known as the oldest white wine in the world and is the highlight of a visit to the winery’s cellar.

In 1961, English wine connoisseur Hugh Johnson described the wine after tasting the penultimate bottle:

🍷Contains "active elements of life that it had absorbed from the sun that summer long ago."
🍷He also mentioned the bottle of "brown, Madeira-like liquid", which "died" (became like vinegar) due to contact with air after they tasted it twice.
