I've never really been a podcast person bc how does someone find the time to listen to that many hour long podcasts or more? 30-60 sec clips are the end state of video content consumption as proven by tiktok, reels, clipping culture, etc Subconsciously when someone says they listen to a lot of podcasts, I think that person must have a lot of free time and/or doesn't understand how to get that information more efficiently

For me, it's either short form content or long form content Most stuff in the middle should really be on one end of the spectrum or the other but like most things, there are exceptions I've over-indexed on shorter form content for years while I'd actually like to be spending more time with longer form content but it's hard to find the time in modern life with everything competing for your attention constantly

+1 i've never really understood the meta they're not consistently interesting enough, can't listen while i work (too distracting), and i'd rather just listen to music in the short periods where i need to fill dead air.

I definitely am a podcast (and radio) person, and often will listen to an episode in instalments in those in-between movements over a couple days. I can also smash a full episode while making dinner or doing house stuff etc. There’s shows I listen to regularly, others I tune in for the guest, and I also listen to a lot of music. Agreed on your point about producing 30-60 clips. Meet your audience where they’re at. Give the people what they want, and get the signal out there. Not everyone’s here for the full episodes, but for people who are into it, the long form is everything. And who’s to say what’ll be significant in the future?

I listen to one pod religiously + occasionally load up a bunch of eps around a topic/person I’m researching. I save eps for when I’m on a walk, commuting or to motivate me to clean lol. I think the parasocial element kicks in for a lot of ppl. its an effective channel for building deep sustained loyalty vs shorts

My commute is ~30 minutes, so I can make good progress in a week. Even so, I’ve become very selective of my podcasts lately. It’s not so much about acquiring new information but processing along with the host/guest. A good episode is one that makes my mind wander along with it. Pacing helps.

I like the medium because you learn a lot about how a person thinks by listening to them talk for a few hours I usually listen when I’m driving and at like 1.5x-2x speed

this is definitely a /hottakes I agree with I find it very difficult to do other activities as well when listening and actually absorb that information properly, so have to be fully concentrated on it … which takes serious time

Get yourself a dog that needs to be walked 1-2 hours a day at minimum. That much walking gets tedious and don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to be with my own silence and thoughts, but doing it so much everyday gets kind of boring. Need podcasts to pretend I have human friends I’m walking with and talking to me.

i think people play it on the background, mostly to block their own thoughts; people used to have radio on 24/7 in the kitchen for similar purpose

I feel you! I tried that and it didn't work. I tried to listen to podcasts while driving to work in my car, but after a couple of week I realized that I don't hear anything and it only makes me anxious, so I got back to listening to music instead. It, at least, makes me focus and relax.
