Installation views of Topology of Loss @loackme’s solo exhibition Playgrounds. On view until April 25. Each work in this series begins with raw fractal noise and is put through a repetitive cycle of resizing and extreme JPEG compression. The codec, designed to discard visual information deemed imperceptible, starts producing characteristic block artifacts and distortions when pushed well beyond its intended range. After each recompression, a fresh layer of noise is reintroduced at partial opacity. Artifacts accumulate into a dense, fragmented image surface. Colour cycling and dithering are then used to animate the resulting image, revealing what the codec and rescaling leave behind.
