Kaitong Zhang (born 1991 in Hebei, China) graduated from North China University of Science and Technology and the Kunsthochschule Kassel in Germany. He currently lives and works between Berlin, Athens, and Beijing. From 2018 to 2024, he studied in the Fine Arts program and the Meisterschüler program at Kunsthochschule Kassel under Prof. Andrea Büttner. Moving continuously between different cultural contexts, Zhang’s perception of boundaries and identity has gradually become blurred, forming a practice centered on observation and analysis. In his work, painting is no longer merely a static visual presentation, but a visible process of thinking activated through viewing, establishing a psychological connection with the viewer. He extracts images from their original contexts, allowing them to become residual structures floating in time—both familiar and strange. Through this process, images enter a fluid state between seeing, disappearance, and regeneration, placing the act of viewing itself in a condition of sustained hesitation. Zhang has held solo exhibitions at Double Double Gallery (Beijing), Nanotte Gallery (Nanjing), and Grains Project Space (Cologne), and initiated personal projects at Rear Window Project Space (Berlin) and Nadan Berlin (Berlin). His work has also been presented in group exhibitions at Museum Wiesbaden (Wiesbaden), Documenta Halle (Kassel), Tang Contemporary Art (Beijing), Absent Gallery (Guangzhou), Yushe (Shanghai), The Blanc (New York), Spoiler Project Space (Berlin), and Daumenlutscher Gallery (Berlin), among others.
