Dithering was developed to approximate gradients and continuous tones within the constraints of limited colour palettes — a workaround born from the demands of early print and computing. It operates by distributing pixels across a grid according to a matrix that governs the pattern of approximation. Here, those matrices are swapped for unconventional alternatives, pulling the algorithm away from its intended purpose.
