RJ The Dark Room, 2026 Acrylic on canvas 30 x 40 cm Gesture undergoes a comparable widening, and here the interviews return, unprompted, to the same anxiety: that something essential to the hand-made image might not survive its translation into the digital. RJ defines gesture as “the trace or presence of the human in whatever is being made” — a trace that painting carries almost by default, but that a digital process can obscure unless the artist works to keep it visible.
