I was extremely active in MMO governance back in my WoW days ( one of the top guilds in the world, cc @vitalik.eth ) and when crypto rolled around, I was amed to jump into onchain governance. After a 4 years, it became clear: most participants in DAOs were underqualified, inexperienced, and focused on the wrong thing and the shimmer wore off for me.
Guild and DAO politics are almost identical. Both aim for similar goals, but it’s the people who define everything. In gaming, a guild either evolves into a casual RPG group or a true progression guild depending on leadership, discipline, and culture. It’s no different with DAOs. Structure alone doesn’t determine success the people do. No serious fund, business, or government would operate like most DAOs because they often resist real systems and accountability. Many of the most active participants aren’t building for the future, they’re trying to protect their own slice of paradise, often suffocating the project’s potential without realizing it. 3 replies
