there's no simple solution. only thing that would slow the nuclear arms race is if people realise it's not the only weapon that nations use

If only this argument was so simple to boil it down as such. One country facing an existential threat from historically aggressive States, deterrence is a necessity.

This is how I have framed it to people recently. Always hammer home the point of who actually has been the aggressor for 75 years.

"What would you do if someone stole your land and house?"

This is another sign similar to the push for war in Iraq. 
When the NYT starts to cheerlead war. Agree about weapons, what to do etc...
